Turkey Trot

Posted Thursday, November 10th, 2011 by rmeyer
Mr. Wroblewski wanted to thank everyone that participated in the Turkey Trot this afternoon. Despite the snow, sleet, and freezing wind, our kids were troopers! Through their food donations, we were able to collect 196 items with a total weight of 192 pounds for the District 54 food pantry. What an amazing sign of generosity exhibited by our families. I am positive that many families will benefit from these donations this holiday season.

May 13, 2011

Ask your students why they were told to stop learning on Friday the 13th! I hope they can tell you that they were “forced to play games” with their class before lunch. This was an earned reward for a job well done in April. Once again your children met our PBIS goal by going below the number of behavior documentation forms from April of 2010. Your children really know how to display Leo’s Pride! Please encourage your students to continue t meet their goals. We have many fun activities planned for the end of the year I would want them to be able to enjoy every one. As the end of the year quickly approaches, we want to make sure we wrap up the year on a very positive note.  Please remind your child that learning is still taking place and to stay focused on making it a successful end of the year.

Just some important reminders below:

  • Monday, May 23:            “Double your MAP Target Growth” Pizza Party at lunch

(Invitations will be given to participating students)

  • Monday, May 23:            1/2 Evening Concert at Eisenhower
  • Wednesday, May 25:       Patrols, Bus Patrols, Broadcaster Appreciation Breakfast
  • Thursday, May 26:          MAP results will be sent home
  • Friday, May 27th and Monday May 30th   NO SCHOOL
  • Tuesday, May 31st:        Field Day
  • Thursday, June 2:            Our last community assembly
  • Friday, June 3:                 Kindergarten Celebration Day
  • Monday, June 6:              Sixth Grade (PM) Celebration Lunch, Recognition, and Kickball game
  • Monday, June 6:              The last day of school for Kindergarten.

The last day of school for Grades 1 – 6 is June 7th . Dismissal will be at 10:40.

  • Please return your registration forms for next year. Although it is past the due date, we are still accepting forms. It is important that we get them back. Thank you!

Please read the important message below from District 54 regarding transportation for next year. When planning childcare for next year, please plan accordingly.

  • “It is the District’s long standing practice that a student must have consistent pick up and drop off points to ensure student safety. In the past some student’s pick up/drop off location have changed weekly and sometimes daily which the District will not agree to. As you can certainly appreciate, the bus driver and other District personnel attend to multiple children in the bus pick up and drop off environment. A rotating pick up/drop off location is unsafe because it creates a situation where a mistake can easily be involved involving the route that your student is placed on. Please know that as a District we are totally committed to your student’s safety.”

As we look through the history here at Churchill, we can recall many elements that have changed. One of those elements is people. We are extremely fortunate to fill our staff with people devoted to student success, who are hard workers, and who are always looking at ways to improve instruction to help meet our BHAG “Big Hairy Audacious Goal” of having 95% of our students meeting and exceeding in both reading and math ISAT assessments. There are some staffing changes that will take place for the school 2011-2012 school year providing new staff members the opportunity to support our Churchill community. We are very fortunate to continue to offer a full multi‐grade environment for our students. Ideally your students in grades 1, 3, and 5 will loop up with their current teacher. However, for the 11‐12 school year, we will be creating an additional 5/6 classroom and be reducing one 3/4 classroom. Therefore we will need to reconfigure students in grade 5 throughout the 6 sections instead of the 5 we currently have. We will also need to redistribute one of our 3/4 sections from our six into the remaining five classrooms.  Students in grades 1 and students in 5 of the 3rd grade sections will loop with their current classmates into grades 2 and 4. When placing all of our other students, a great deal of hard work goes into this process. Our placement decisions involve team input and are completed with great care. Class lists will be posted on registration day which is August 11th.

We are excited to share the following with you.

New to Churchill will be Ms. Laura Gray and Ms. Carmela Scaravalle joining the 5/6 team.  Ms. Jennifer McVay will be joining the bilingual resource team.  We also wish a fond farewell to Mr. Tyler Huffman who has accepted a teaching position at Dooley Elementary School for the 2011-2012 school year.

As of right now we are extremely excited to share that 74% of our students met their target growth goal in math and reading this year! We also can report that 31% of all of our students doubled their target growth goal in reading and 22% doubled their target growth goal in math. It looks like we will be buying a lot of pizza for our “Double your Growth” lunch! We are so proud of all we have done this year…our kids really know that their job here is to learn and they are excited to share the progress they have made towards their goals.
