PBIS
Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports
PBIS is a way to establish procedures to teach students the expected behaviors in the school setting. A school establishes 3-5 behavioral expectations for students to follow in all school settings. These behaviors are taught, practiced, and acknowledgements given for students when they are showing the expected behavior.
Churchill’s three expected behaviors are BE SAFE, BE RESPONSIBLE, and BE RESPECTFUL. Students have been taught the expectations in these three areas for the hallway and stairs, arrival and dismissal, and the playground. In February the PBIS team will be explaining and modeling the next area which will be the expectations for classroom behavior.
Students are acknowledged for doing the right thing with gold Lion’s ROAR tickets. Throughout the week and month students’ names are selected from those receiving the tickets and are guest PLEDGE speakers, invited to a special celebration, or being helpers at all school assemblies. The PBIS team has also started student recognition through the A-ROARED AWARDS. Each teacher selects two students per week who have displayed one or more of the expectations in the classroom. Students’ names are read at morning announcements and they come to the office receive their award from the administrators and have their picture taken for our entry way bulletin board.
Churchill students have been doing a great job of implementing the three expectations.
